Glaucoma is a slowly progressive, insidious disease of the eye, associated with a chronic elevation of intraocular pressure. It is the leading cause of blindness in Americans of African descent.
In some patients, the eye is red and painful due to abrupt, severe elevation of intraocular pressure. In others, because the elevation of intraocular pressure develops gradually, there is no pain or redness of the eye. Often, severe and irreversible damage can occur before either the patient or physician recognizes the diagnosis. Screening of patients for glaucoma by measuring intraocular pressure is vital. Glaucoma is treated in allopathy with topical adrenergic agonists, cholinergic agonists, beta-blockers, and prostaglandin analogues. Occasionally, systemic absorption of beta-blocker from eye drops can be sufficient to cause side effects of bradycardia, hypotension, heart block, bronchospasm, impotence, or depression.
Homeopathy could offer a safe and alternative mode of treatment for glaucoma. It may be used alone or with the eye drops prescribed by the ophthalmologist. In that case, soon the need for the eye drops reduces and the patients are therefore exposed to lesser toxic effects of these medicines.
Some of the specific homeopathic medicines that have been found useful in the treatment of glaucoma are:
OSMIUM is a homoeopathic drug that is useful for glaucoma with iridescent vision. Green colors surround the objects esp. candlelight. They have violent neuralgic pains above and below the eyes with watering of the eyes. There is an increase in the intra- ocular tension, with a dim sight and photophobia (intolerance of light).
PHOSPHORUS also has a green halo about the candlelight like Osmium. Letters appear red. Sensation as if everything were covered with a mist or veil, or something pulled tightly over eyes. The patient sees well by shading eyes with the hand. There is a fatigue of the eyes and head even without much use of the eyes. Degenerative changes in the eyes with soreness and curved lines are seen in old people.
It is also a good drug for retinal trouble with lights and hallucination of vision.
Black points seem to float before the eyes. There may be an atrophy of the optic nerve and partial loss of vision from abuse of tobacco or a thrombosis of retinal vessels and degenerative changes in retinal cells.
COMOCLADIA DENTATA is to be considered when there are throbbing pains worse by heat. There is a ciliary neuralgia with the eyes feeling large and protruded, especially RIGHT, which is worse, near warm stove. Sees only a glimmer of light with the left eye. Glaucoma, with a sense of fullness; eyeball feels too large. Eyes feel as if pressed outward. Motion of eyes aggravates.
PHYSOSTIGMA is another drug for glaucoma with flashes of light and partial blindness.
There is a contraction of the pupils and twitching of ocular muscles. There is also a spasm of the ciliary muscle in the eye, with irritability after using the eyes. It is an important drug for patients with an increasing myopia.
Other eye conditions where this drug is useful are: night-blindness, photophobia, floaters, paresis of accommodation and astigmatism.
PRUNUS SPINOSA is useful for glaucoma with a sudden pain in left eye as if it would burst, better by lachrymation. There is sometimes also a bursting pain in the right eyeball, shooting like lightning through the brain to the occiput. It is also useful for ciliary neuralgia, irido-choroiditis and opacity of the vitreous humor.
SPIGELIA has glaucoma with a sensation in the eyes as if they are too large. There is a severe pain in and around the eyes, extending deep into the socket. There is also a pressive pain on turning them. There may be a pain from beneath the eminence of the forehead and temples, extending to the eyes. It is felt as a semi-lateral headache, involving the left eye; the pain is violent and throbbing; worse, making a false step.
The pupils are dilated.

Homeopathic potions are not drugs. They have no pharmacological effect. It is pseudo scientific woo nonsense and has consistently failed every good test that has been performed.
Telling people to use homeopathy instead of drugs that are proven to work increases suffering and is utterly irresponsible.
Hi,
I am not sure whether you have the qualifications or knowledge or insight to comment on homeopathy, but I am sure that it it a scientific system of medicine.
The founder of homeopathy has asked homeopathic practitioners to be unprejudiced observers. I humbly request you to check out these links as an unprejuduced oberver. They might help make you look at homeopathy from a different point of view. I suggest that you also click on the links given in each of the blogs mentioned below:
http://homeopathicure.wordpress.com/2009/12/26/save-homeopathy-in-the-uk/, http://homeopathicure.wordpress.com/2009/09/03/homeopathy-works/
I’ve looked at those links, but they contain nothing that make me change my mind. The fact that it is common and condoned by the Indian Government does not affect the lack of evidence for efficacy for homeopathy.
What would make me change my mind would be independent, replicated, methodologically sound clinical trials of homeopathy for some non-self-limiting conditions that showed statistically significant results, published in a reputable peer-reviewed journal.
Are you aware of any?
Please find below some of peer reviewed journals in Homoeopathy. However there are many other journals (not of Homoeopathy) which are peer reviewed and have published artivcles in Homoeopathy. Do you have any specific trials for glaucoma?
The main goal of glaucoma treatment is to lower and stabilize intraocular pressure either by medication, laser treatment, surgery or a combination of the above. This is done in order to slow dow or even halt the progression of the disease. None of the above mentioned homeopathic treatments have this desired effect.
Glaucoma more than any other disease should not be treated by the homeopathic drugs mentioned. There is no reliable information in the literature that any of these drugs work better than a plocebo. What make the use of these drugs for glaucoma dangerous is that by using them rather than an established glaucoma drug that lowers intraocular pressure, the elevated pressure will go untreated and will remain at high levels causing damage ti the eye that is irreversible.
I believe a physician prescribing these in America would be censored by his.or her medical society and be open to a malpractice suit when damage was docummented which ocured by using the homeopathic drug rather than glaucoma drugs which have known benificial intraocular pressure reducing ability.
Dear Drs. Poley and Harasymowy.
Thank you for your comments. I can understand your anxiety about homeopaths treating conditions like glaucoma. I suppose this anxiety comes from the fact that most MDs (allopathic doctors) have no idea about the basic science and principles of homeopathy. A well trained homeopath however, not only knows homeopathy well but is also fully aware of allopathic or “modern” medicine. In India, a homeopathic student goes through the same rigorous training in anatomy, physiology, pathology, medicine, surgery and gynecology as does his peer being trained in allopathy (http://homeopathicure.wordpress.com/2009/12/26/save-homeopathy-in-the-uk/).
I do not wish to make ‘tall claims’ but the fact is that I have been treating a lot of ophthalmic cases in Mumbai, India in collaboration with an ophthalmic surgeon. We have treated a lot of cases of uveitis and secondary glaucoma where the patient who is initially on allopathic treatment is gradually tapered off his medication and soon is treated with only homeopathic medicines. I have had the opportunity to present our work in Ophthalmology to the Bombay Ophthalmic Association on many occasions. I have also been a faculty at an international conference on ophthalmology ‘Eye Advance 2008’ where I presented our ophthalmic cases that were cured with homeopathy.
Some of our cases are also published on our web site http://www.drvaishnav.com. You may want to check out this link http://www.drvaishnav.com/Ophthal.htm
“the basic science and principles of homeopathy”
That’s the basic problem. There is no science in homeopathy and the ‘principles’ are all concocted to ‘explain’ homeopathy, but fail at every step. Apart from the fact there is no credible evidence that homeopathy is any better than placebo, there is no plausible mechanism of action.
Hi, I am not a doctor. I work and write for the Quebec Glaucoma Foundation. There is important information that you have given and that is that you work in collaboration with an ophthalmic surgeon. Whereas these collaborations may be common in India, the reality in North America is that any medically trained doctor will base his treatments on scientifically proven research. We are simply dealing with two different paradigms, one isn’t necessarily better than the other.
I think that when concrete scientific data is available about homeopathic treatments for glaucoma and that these results can be reproduced over the course of several studies then perhaps the medical establishment would be more open to the possibilities of its use.
For the time being lowering intraocular pressure is the current standard of north american medical care for glaucoma by medical or surgical means. These treatments have been proven to significantly slow optic nerve damage even in patients with a normal IOP.
I believe that homeostasis is effective on tissue function. So I think that homeostasis can affect the trabecular system function. But if an agent will be used,it must be used before glaucoma.I don’t think the agents mentioned in your web site will heal glaucoma complications.
just wondering – one of the remedies listed here is piperannum as an alternate – I cannot find any info on a remedy with this name – is it available anywhere
I have not mentioned piperannum in my blog post. Did you mean Physostigma? It is easily available.
Dear Dr Vaishnav,
I have been using Homeo medicine since my childhood, Iam 31 now.
In the year 2005 i was diagnosed with Glaucoma in my right eye, i have used eye drops prescribed by my ophthalmologist and used homeo pills too. I lost vision in the year 2007 September and suffered neo-vascularisation in the year 2009. The pain was unbearable, Opthalmologist named it “a painful blind eye” and must be removed and replaced with a prosthetic.
With the bunch of eyedrops that i used the pain came under control and i have no pain now. But my eye looks ugly. I know the lost vision is irreversible, i want my eye to appear normal.
Is it possible? Please advice.
I regret to inform you that the eye cannot regain its original appearance.
dr.
I was diagnosed with iop i.e 25 in right eye and 21 in left eye. Doctor told that my case is cat on wall, it may lead to glaucoma.
now my eye intra ocular pressure is under control, but some time i feel pain in eye and forehead.
please advise me whether i can retain vision or the iop will lead to total blindness in near future.
As long as your iop is controlled, you should not have loss of vision. Chronically elevated iop leads to changes in the eye that can lead to blindness.
Dr.
Thanking you Dr. for your mail regarding glaucoma & details of Homeopathy medicine available for glaucoma problem.
As of now my iop is 20 in right eye and 16 in left eye. I am under allopathy treatment – using Timolet eye drops 3 times per day.
Grateful, if you could advise Homeopathy doctor in Chennai for consultation.
I am residing at Velachery village, near IIT Chennai – 15 km from Chennai central Railway station.
Thanking you sir,
Is there any eye drops commonly used for glocoma
There are no homeopathic eyedrops for Glaucoma. A homeopath would prescribe constitutional medicines in the form of pills.
I have physostigma venenosum 1m eye drops (30ml) made by Dr. Masood Homeopathic Pharmaceuticals made in Pakistan. However, I can find any literature on how to use them. I did however use gelsemium semp. 30x for the pain in both my eyes, especially the right eye. It was like touching a bad bruise, just painful to the touch. Within 15 seconds the pain went away, and I could rub my eyes vigorously. It felt so good. Honestly, I was very skeptical, but very quickly after I put the pellets in my mouths, I interrupted my conversation with my daughter who was standing nearby so I could touch my eyes because they felt different. I was totally amazed.
hi dr i m hardeep i m very sad my eyes galcouma and head is very heavy

Hello Vijay,
My Father has Glaucoma and he is taking Xalatan and other eye drops.
We are used to Homeopathy medicines as well for years now.
Wanted to seek your advice if we can use both Homeopath and allopathy medicine together to control IOP?
Yes, he can take homeopathy and allopathy together. There will be no drug interaction.
Thanks for proper suggestions
Thanking you doctor for your valuable suggestions on glaucoma. Now my iop has come down from i.e 25 in right eye and 21 in left eye to 20 & 17 in right & left eyes.

You need to visit a homeopath who will need to take a detailed history and then suggest the remedy.
how to control glaucoma through homoeopathy along with existing allopathy
Your homeopath will study your symptoms in detail and suggest a homeopathic remedy. You can initially take both homeopathy and allopathy together. As your intra ocular pressure comes under control, your eye doctor may be able to reduce your dose.
I am a glaucoma in left eye due to Surgery Pl. Help me for homeopath treatment.
