Homeopathic medicine has been an enigma for many. It is a complex science that needs years of study to be able to use it judiciously and that has generated a lot of skepticism from the ‘scientific community’. However, not many people are aware that in most countries where homeopathy is taught in the universities, the syllabus is similar to that of the conventional medicine course. The same text books are often used and a similar curriculum is followed as for the MBBS/ MD student, in addition they are taught the other homeopathy subjects.
Vijay Vaishnav’s article on ‘A Scientific Approach to the Study and Practice of Homeopathy‘ published in The California Homeopath highlights the importance of science in homeopathy. The article talks about the scientific training of homeopathy students and the use of their knowledge of the basic preclinical, clinical and paraclinical subjects in making a good prescription. During homeopathic training, students are taught Anatomy (normal structure) and Physiology (normal function), followed by Pathology (abnormal structure and function), and then the clinical subjects like Medicine (as well as Surgery and Gynecology in most homeopathy schools worldwide). He writes that mastery of both the pre-clinical and clinical subjects is essential because it enables one to differentiate between the common and characteristic symptoms in each diseased state. It is equally important to integrate this knowledge with one’s knowledge of homeopathy. He has used detailed examples from anatomy, physiology, and pathology, as well as a couple of hospital case studies, to demonstrate this integrative approach in action.
Not many are aware that there is a lot of research on homeopathy being conducted by institutions all over the world. Both Vijay and I had the honor to be associated with the Central Council for Research in Homeopathy, which is an apex research organization under Ministry of AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy), Govt. of India which undertakes, coordinates, develops, disseminates and promotes scientific research in Homoeopathy. We were subject matter experts and have contributed to many of their publications like ‘Homeopathy for Mother and Child Care’, ‘Study of Homeopathic Medicnies through Clinical Verification’ and monographs on ‘Menopausal Syndrome’ and ‘Diabetes Mellitus’.
