April 10 is celebrated the world over as the birthday of Dr. Samuel Hahnemann (April 10, 1755- July 2, 1843), the founder of Homeopathy. This man brought about a sea change in the way patients were being treated during his time.
You will be surprised to know that just over 250 years ago, the prevailing medical system in the Western World believed in treating patients with violent purging, leeching or blood-letting (venesection), and other methods that in the present day would be called barbaric. The patients suffering from mental health issues were generally chained and often flogged to drive away evil spirits that they felt were responsible for the ‘insane’ behavior.
Hahnemann was disillusioned by this therapeutic approach and he saw that people died more often because of the treatment than the actual disease. He realized that the treatment provided by the medical practitioners was not based on any fixed principles- allopathy, a term coined by him and is still being used to describe the mainstream therapy in use today. This disenchantment with allopathy made him give up his medical practice because he believed that the highest ideal of cure is rapid, gentle and permanent restoration of the health, or removal and annihilation of the disease in its whole extent, in the shortest, most reliable, and most harmless way, on easily comprehensible principles (Organon of Medicine, § 2).
That is exactly what a homeopath strives to achieve.
Dr. Hahnemann was not only a doctor, but at a very early age, showed keen interest in research and had a lot of scientific and literary pursuits and made significant contributions beyond homeopathy.
He was a distinguished linguist and had a mastery over eight languages. In fact, after he gave up his practice, he supported his family by translating major scientific and medical works.
His medical translations include great works as ‘A Treatise on the Materia Medica’ by William Cullen and many other medical books.
As a noted chemist, he was the first to prepare a soluble form of Mercury and did extensive work on the toxic effects of Mercury and other poisons.
He devised a test to detect the adulteration of wine with lead and his test to detect arsenic poisoning made him famous in the field of Forensic medicine.
He was a strong proponent of good diet and regimen and advocated a healthy diet, sleep, exercise and fresh air as a very important part of Preventive medicine (Organon of Medicine, § 261-263).
He was an early proponent of humane treatment for the mentally ill, advocating for compassionate care and moral treatment rather than the cruelty and confinement common in the 18th century and thus was the first to call for a Psychiatric Reform (Organon of Medicine, § 210-230).
Such was the man behind the creation of Homeopathy- a true versatile genius. No wonder that “Non inutilis vixi” (I have not lived in vain) are the famous last words and epitaph of Dr. Samuel Hahnemann, the founder of homeopathy.
