World Mental Health Day & Homeopathy

October 10 is celebrated as World Mental Health Day. A special shout-out to our daughter Shreya Vaishnav, a National Certified Counselor (NCC). She is currently pursuing a PhD in Counseling and Counselor Education at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and has been a friend, philosopher and guide to her family in times of stress! She has been advocating the  need to give importance to mental health issues and treat it at par with physical health issues. When you have physical pain you immediately seek help for it. So why not for mental pain? Why the taboo and stigma behind mental illnesses? Often, people proudly rattle off the list of diseases that they have- “I have diabetes mellitus and coronary heart disease and osteoporosis and rheumatoid arthritis and asthma” but in some cultures, people will never share their emotional pain and the fact that they are suffering from depression or anxiety or OCD (to just name a few of the mental health disorders).

What has homeopathy to offer? Homeopathy is a holistic therapy where the mind and the body are given equal importance. The homeopath’s high and only mission is to restore the sick to health- both mentally and physically. The homeopath inquires into the mental (emotional) state of the person, even when she has mainly physical ailments, because the homeopath recognizes that the mind and body are part of the whole human being and one needs to bring both these aspects into a state of balance. Emotional causes of diseases like grief, anger, disappointment, fright, insults, etc. have their treatment in homeopathy with remedies like Natrum mur, Nux vomica, Ignatia, Staphysagria, Aconite. Similarly, emotional symptoms like weeping, depression, anxiety associated with physical complaints can be helped with homeopathic remedies like Pulsatilla, Aurum metallicum, Argentum nitricum, Chamomilla, Nux vomica, etc.
