Homeopathy in Heart Disease?

People often scoff at the fact that homeopathic medicines may be useful in treating various heart diseases. This obviously is due to their lack of knowledge and a deep rooted prejudice against homeopathy. However, a homeopath cannot claim that he can treat all types of heart diseases. He must know the scope and limitations of his therapeutics.

Homeopathy is useful in cardiac neurosis- esp. post infarction and post by-pass surgery, hypertension, chronic ischemic heart disease, heart diseases that are secondary to other systemic diseases and of course rejected cases.

There is poor scope with homeopathy in congenital heart disease, acute angina and myocardial infarction, cardiomyopathies, organic valvular lesions, gross Congestive Cardiac Failure (CCF) and atherosclerosis.

Homeopaths look for peculiarities in the patient’s presentation of the symptoms and the more peculiar they are the greater is the indication of that particular medicine:

LATRODECTUS MACTANS has a violent precordial pain extending to the axilla and down the arm and forearm to fingers, with numbness of extremity. The left arm feels paralysed. This drug has all the symptoms of angina.

LAUROCERASUS is useful when the patient puts the hand on the heart region which relieves the pain. The cardiac asthma is relieved by lying down.

LILIUM TIGRINUM has a cold feeling about the heart. There is angina pectoris with pain in the right arm.

LITHIUM CARB has pain in the heart which is worse before and during urination and better after urination.

MYRTUS COMMUNIS has stitching pains in the left breast, running through to shoulder blade. There is a burning sensation in the left chest.

NAJA TRIPUDIANS has pains extending to the nape of the neck, left shoulder and arm with anxiety and fear of death.

When the pathology is prominent and there are plenty of signs as well as symptoms pointing to an organic lesion, the homeopathic medicine will not be able to cure or reverse the disease process, but will help in preventing further progress and let the patient lead a more comfortable life. Certain homeopathic medicines will then be useful in treating hypertension, ischemic heart disease:

BARYTA MUR is indicated in arteriosclerosis when a high systolic pressure with a comparatively low diastolic tension is attended by cerebral and cardiac symptoms. There may also be aneurysms of the heart or the aorta. It is useful in pulmonary hypertension and for bronchial affections of old people with cardiac dilatation.

CRATAEGUS is a medicine that acts on the myocardium and is also useful for myocarditis. The heart is dilated and the first sound is weak. It is known to have a solvent power upon calcareous deposits in the arteries.

CONVALLARIA MAJALIS is of use when the ventricles are over distended and dilatation begins and when there is no compensatory hypertrophy and when venous stasis is marked. It is useful for dyspnea and dropsy with suppression of urine.

IBERIS is useful in cardiac debility after influenza. It controls vascular excitement in hypertrophy with thickening of the heart’s walls. There is a dilatation of the heart.

LYCOPUS VIRGINICUS is useful in exophthalmic and toxic goiter causing heart disease. There is also hemoptysis (spitting of blood) due to valvular heart disease. The pulse does not synchronize with the heart (atrial fibrillation). It is also indicated in cardiac asthma.

STROPHANTHUS HISPIDUS is also a drug for exophthalmic goiter. There is anemia with palpitation and breathlessness. It is indicated in mitral and tricuspid valve regurgitation where edema and dropsy have supervened. The heart’s action is weak, rapid, and irregular due to muscular debility and insufficiency.

i completely agree with your ideas about scopes & limitations of homoeopathy in heart diseases but i personally feel & with my own clinical experience independently & under prominant homoeopaths [my teachers] there is more or could be more scope in few listed cases or heart conditions too. i.e. congenital heart disease or acute angina. people & homoeopaths are scared to use these remedies planely out of fear of wrong selection of remedy in acutes & endangering lives of pt.But still people are not yet ready to accept deaths under homoeopathic medication so your views are justified.Nice work… Keep it up doc

    1. The symptoms that you have described could be suggestive of congestive cardiac failure. He needs to be urgently seen by a cardiologist to make sure that his heart is pumping the blood properly. Please take him urgently for an opinion if you haven’t already. After you see the cardiologist you may send his findings to me and then we can decide whether he can be helped by homeopathy.

    Very useful article.
ihave to ask you about my mother’s problem.
She is 46 1/2 years old.
    she is a hypertensive patient.
Her symptoms are that she has too sequeeze her left side of the chest. the pain radiates to the back, left jaw, to the left arm till elbow. The pain is always there with varying intensity.

Please guide me as too should she take homoeopathy treatment? or what should be done.
Expecting your reply at the earliest
    Thankyou

    1. Is this pain related to movements and exertion? There are two possibilities that you have to look at. Have her examined for cervical spondylosis and for angina (X ray of the cervical spine and ECG).

The spondylosis should respond well to homeopathy. If the ECG shows any changes, she would need a cardiologist’s opinion for further investigations and treatment. We can opine about the scope of homeopathy after all the tests are done.

This is a condition that cannot be cured with a medical line of treatment. The symptoms and complications of aortic regurgitation with LVH can be treated medically including with homeopathy, but the final solution may be a surgical intervention.

i had a condiiton where i feel that my heart stops/struggles for few seconds and then become normal again. My doc did 24hrs ecg but it turned out to be normal as i had no such episode during those 24 hrs. Now i had the same condition twice in these 2 weeks. Is it a heart disease? which homeo medicine is suitable 4 me?
I was a bad eater for past few years who was not choosing healthy options and now i feel that fat has deposited in my heart artteries. Please reply me
    Thanxs

    1. This could be due to ectopics or extra heart beats. The normal beat after the extra heart beat is delayed and more forceful and can then be felt by the individual as if the heart missed a beat. There are many causes for it. Avoid coffee, tea and other stimulants. You will need a thorough lab investigation to look for cholesterol and lipids, blood sugar, etc. and clear your doubts about fat deposition in the blood vessels.
If possible, have an ECG done when you have the symptoms.

Thanxs alot 4 replying i had all my tests talken which seems to be normal apart from HB1ac 7.00 when i fainted after waking up 2 am from sleep and feeling extremely hot, heart beating very fast and shortness of breath followed by fainting episode. i suffered that condition for a about 7min before fainting, after that my partener called ambulance. Emergency services arrived within 5 min and took ECG but i was normal at that time and so was my ECG normal too. To confirm whether i m diabetic or not my GP has done further investigation by doing HB1AC fasting tests asa well. He figured it out to be 5.9 which is onthe border line with normal reading. Still he advised be to be aware of not having too much sugary stuff in my diet.

I am 59 years of age. I have been have breathlessness problem since the last 6-7 years. I have been on Atenolol since last 15 years as a precaution as my father suffered from HOCM (Hypertrophic Obstructive Cardiomyopathy. The symptoms of the disease were were strong but setting of the disease was not evident in the regular tests like ECG, ECO, 48 hours Holter, Stress Thalium test, TEE test. Ultimately, my physician did Angiogrphy . It was diagnosed of HOCM with Intra cavity gradient. The gradient was > 60. I have mild hypertension also. I was on Anenolol-50, Amlodepine-2.5. The doctors started Norpace-100(Disopyramide phosphate) . The doctors tried Veramil also but did not suit me. Even other drugs are not giving me any relief. The doctors are thinking of myocotomy but are a little skeptical as the thickening of the muscle is in the middle. They have not expressed anything but from their communication it looks that surgery is a very risky propsition.
Please advise, if there is any thing in Homoeopathy that can help.

  10. This is often a genetically inherited disease where the heart wall starts thickening. Many patients are asymptomatic, but if symptoms appear they need to be treated aggressively. This inherited condition cannot be reversed by any medical treatment including homeopathy.
